Why the skin microbiota matters
Protective barrier
A balanced skin microbiota supports the skin’s barrier function and hinders unwanted microorganisms.
Correct pH
Some skin bacteria help maintain the acid mantle, the slightly acidic pH of the skin’s surface.
Hydration
The balance between microorganisms and the hydrolipidic film contributes to hydrated, supple skin.
Balance
Dry, moist and oily areas host different communities: the right ratio between species is what counts.
Skin dysbiosis
What changes between a balanced skin microbiota and one in dysbiosis
Balanced microbiota
- ✔ Rich variety of species
- ✔ Beneficial species prevail, such as Staphylococcus epidermidis
- ✔ Slightly acidic pH
- ✔ Protected skin barrier
Microbiota in dysbiosis
- ✖ Lower variety of species
- ✖ Increase in unwanted species, such as Staphylococcus aureus
- ✖ Altered pH
- ✖ Possible discomfort such as redness, dryness or blemishes

The skin conditions most studied in relation to the microbiota
In oily areas, acne is associated with a shift in the balance between Cutibacterium acnes strains and the other skin bacteria. The report shows the microbial genera and species associated with the main skin concerns.
During flare-ups, an increase in Staphylococcus aureus and a lower variety of species are often observed. Knowing the composition of your microbiota is useful information to share with your dermatologist.
Studies have observed differences in the skin microbiota of people with rosacea, including the role of the Demodex mite and its associated bacteria.
Changes in the microbiota have also been described in areas affected by psoriasis, with a different presence of some bacterial genera compared with healthy skin.
Cleansers, cosmetics, beauty treatments and antibiotics can change the skin microbiota. Repeating the test lets you see their effects over time.
Frequently asked questions
Anyone who wants to know the state of their skin microbiota: for example with recurring blemishes, dryness or redness, to choose cosmetics and treatments more knowingly, or to assess their effects over time. Sample collection is simple and non-invasive.
At home, with a swab rubbed on the indicated areas of the skin, following the instructions included in the kit. Sample pickup is free.
The report is sent by email within 3 weeks of sample pickup.
No. The test is not a diagnosis and the tips are not a treatment plan: they describe your microbiota and suggest how to take care of your skin according to the latest scientific literature. We recommend sharing them with your dermatologist, who knows your clinical history.
