Why the oral microbiota matters
Digestion
Together with saliva, the oral microbiota takes part in the first phase of digestion, starting to break down food.
Tooth health
A balanced microbiota helps keep the environment around the teeth stable and supports the normal remineralisation of enamel.
Ecosystem balance
Beneficial bacteria limit the growth of unwanted ones and help maintain a correct oral pH.
First barrier
The mouth is the body’s gateway: the oral microbiota is the first barrier against microorganisms coming from outside.
Gums and soft tissues
A balanced oral ecosystem contributes to the wellbeing of gums and mucous membranes.
Dental implants
Knowing which bacteria live around implants helps your dentist plan check-ups and professional cleaning in the most suitable way.
Oral dysbiosis
What changes between a balanced oral microbiota and one in dysbiosis
Balanced microbiota
- ✔ Low levels of unwanted bacteria
- ✔ High levels of beneficial and commensal bacteria
- ✔ Correct oral pH
- ✔ Stable, protective biofilm
Microbiota in dysbiosis
- ✖ Increase in unwanted bacteria
- ✖ Shortage of beneficial bacteria
- ✖ Altered pH
- ✖ Unbalanced bacterial biofilm

The oral conditions most closely linked to microbiota balance
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. In Italy it affects about 60% of adults, with advanced forms in about 10% of cases, and it is the most common cause of tooth loss. It has a polymicrobial origin: among the most studied species are P. gingivalis, T. denticola and T. forsythia, the so-called “red complex”. Knowing which bacteria are present helps your dentist set up prevention strategies and check-ups.
Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions in the world. It is multifactorial and linked to an imbalance of the oral ecosystem in which cariogenic bacterial species prevail. Good management therefore also includes assessing individual risk and targeted preventive measures.
Inflammation is the first sign of a gum problem: redness, swelling and bleeding on probing. Gingivitis is reversible, but if neglected it can precede periodontitis.
Inflammation around dental implants is common. NGS sequencing studies show that the microbiota of peri-implant sites differs between healthy and inflamed conditions: monitoring it can help your dentist plan check-ups and professional cleaning.

No. The suggestions are not a treatment plan: they outline possible ways to rebalance microbial groups according to the latest scientific literature. We recommend sharing them with your dentist or hygienist, who knows your clinical history.
Yes. PROBiome DIGESTIVE HEALTH includes both the oral and the gut microbiota analysis, with a single kit, a single pickup and a saving of € 99 compared with buying the two tests separately.
