Why the vaginal microbiota matters
Correct pH
Lactobacilli produce lactic acid and keep the vaginal environment slightly acidic.
Protective substances
Some beneficial bacteria produce natural antimicrobial substances that protect the mucosa.
Natural barrier
A balanced microbiota hinders the growth of unwanted microorganisms such as Candida or Gardnerella.
Balance
It keeps the right ratio between the different microbial species living in the vaginal environment.
Vaginal dysbiosis
What changes between a balanced vaginal microbiota and one in dysbiosis
Balanced microbiota
- ✔ Lactobacilli prevail
- ✔ Slightly acidic pH
- ✔ Low levels of unwanted microorganisms
- ✔ Protected mucosa
Microbiota in dysbiosis
- ✖ Fewer lactobacilli
- ✖ Altered pH
- ✖ Increase in unwanted microorganisms
- ✖ Possible discomfort such as itching or burning

The conditions most closely linked to vaginal microbiota balance
It is the most common form of vaginal microbiota imbalance: lactobacilli decrease and other bacteria, such as Gardnerella, increase. It can cause discharge and odour, but often goes unnoticed. Knowing the composition of the microbiota helps understand the picture and discuss it with your gynaecologist.
When the balance is disrupted, microorganisms normally present in small amounts, such as Candida, can overgrow. Itching, burning and discharge that keep coming back are a good reason to get to know your microbiota better.
The vaginal and urinary microbiota are connected: a balanced vaginal environment contributes to urinary tract wellbeing. The report also looks at bacteria associated with cystitis.
The vaginal microbiota changes during pregnancy and while trying to conceive. Knowing its balance is useful information to share with your gynaecologist. To analyse both the vaginal and gut microbiota, see PROBiome WOMAN.
As oestrogen levels fall, lactobacilli tend to decrease and pH rises: this is why dryness and intimate discomfort are more common during menopause. Read more in our article menopause and the vaginal microbiota: how it changes and how to care for it.

No. The suggestions are not a treatment plan: they outline possible ways to rebalance microbial groups according to the latest scientific literature. We recommend sharing them with your gynaecologist, who knows your clinical history.
Yes. PROBiome WOMAN includes both the vaginal and the gut microbiota analysis, with a single kit, a single pickup and a saving of € 99 compared with buying the two tests separately.
